Feature - Sheep farmer James Rebanks

Project

Reportage for Magasinet/ DN

Date

March 2016

Photographer

Jeff Gilbert

Location

Matterdale, Cumbria

- Hop on, said the shepherd James Rebanks, and suddenly I found myself, clinging onto a fast-moving quad bike, squeezed between three sheepdogs at high alert, ready to gather sheep. I soon found out that the hills of the Lake District are much steeper than they look, like a roller coaster. But I survived and got new insights into life as a traditional farmer. Rebanks, who wrote the bestseller «A shepherds life», told me about living in tune with nature and traditions, about how going to Oxford was a disappointment (too many hot-housed toffs), and how sheep farming is a subculture to rival punk!
